Relationship Matters
Johnathon Hines
Relationship Matters
Keynote Description:
Finding ways to connect is essential to building a relationship in the classroom, but human connection must often be paired with establishing trust. Trust is hard to develop and very easily broken. It requires a delicate balance of setting and meeting each other’s expectations. With over a decade of experience in education, Johnathon has learned how to establish trust, not only with students, but also with parents and guardians, school leaders, and other members of the education community. Through scenes from his classroom, learn practical ways you can establish trust over time by being consistent, establishing clear lines of communication, and listening to the thoughts and concerns of all parties, including the youngest learners.
Johnathon’s Bio:
In honor of his extraordinary work and impact in the field of education, Johnathon Hines recently made history as the first African-American male to be named Public School Pre-K Teacher of the Year for the entire State of Georgia. He was honored to be chosen for this recognition and is using his platform to inspire other men to work in early education. Hear his everyday hero story and how you can change the world one child at a time!

Featured Speakers
Dr. Brian Mowry
Supporting and Extending Children’s Mathematical Learning through Exploration, Construction, and Dramatic Play
Dr. Brian Mowry
Supporting and Extending Children’s Mathematical Learning through Exploration, Construction, and Dramatic Play
Session Description:
Play provides an authentic and engaging context for children to accomplish important cognitive and linguistic milestones at their own developmental pace. As children play, they are meeting academic standards that address numeracy, algebra, measurement, and geometric and spatial reasoning while also developing 21st century skills, such as problem solving, communication, collaboration, imagination, and creativity. While dramatic play supports language and cognitive development, exploratory and construction play provide a natural segue to learning associated with STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) integration. The presenter will review empirical research and theory informed through a Vygotskian lens on how children develop language, social emotional and cognitive skills through play. Participants will make practical connections to theory by learning ways to scaffold and guide children in productive, self-selected exploratory and pretend play scenarios that integrate literature and games with the knowledge and skills related to mathematics.
Pre-Conference Session: Diving Deeper into Math
Learn instructional strategies that are the foundation and essential components of an intentional, developmentally appropriate early childhood mathematics curriculum. Activities that teach classification, patterning and spatial temporal reasoning provide requisite forerunner skills preschoolers need to be successful in the domains of geometry, algebra, measurement, and data analysis. The presenter will share resources and suggestions for incorporating children’s literature to enhance instruction and math centers.
Brian’s Bio:
Dr. Brian Mowry is a contributing author of various curriculums and assessment tools, including Frog Street Pre-K and the AIM Observational Assessment. He has presented at several national and local conferences, focusing on topics in Mathematics, STEAM, Dual Language Learners, play, and Developmentally Appropriate Practices. Before joining the Frog Street Team, Dr. Mowry worked in the Austin Independent School District as a bilingual pre-school and kindergarten teacher and as a K-5 math and early childhood instructional specialist and administrator.

Making Center Time Intentional
Center time is a significant part of an early education day. However, many educators are uncertain about how to make this an effective, purposeful practice time. This session will give educators the tools, strategies, and examples to make the most of center time. Participants will understand the difference in implementation and structure. Participants will learn about the best methods of designing centers for optimal impact. This training features activities that help children solidify previously taught concepts by providing intentional practice. This session would be appropriate for intermediate to advanced participants and stakeholders that work with toddler to transitional kindergarten aged students.
Optimizing the Classroom Environment for Dual Language Learners
Learning environments are becoming increasingly diverse, such a demographic shift requires early childhood educators and administrators to embrace culturally relevant practices. We know that children learn best in environments where they feel comfortable, accepted, and safe. This training will focus on the Dual Language Learner: A child who is acquiring two or more languages at the same time, or a child who is learning a second language while continuing to develop their first language. We will discuss effective teaching strategies and the environment needed to support dual language learners. You will learn about activities that support the child’s cognitive, social and emotional, and language/literacy development, as well as strategies that promote a learning environment that is safe, nurturing, responsive, language and communication rich.

Developmentally appropriate practices require that teachers make daily, intentional decisions based on their knowledge of each child’s level of development, taking into consideration the child’s learning style as well as cultural and social differences. This course will help teachers learn how to maintain a classroom environment that helps to promote the cognitive, physical, emotional, and social needs of children. We will explore applicable information and research that can be used to create developmentally appropriate environments that are engaging and active for children ages Birth to Three.

Honoring Children’s Inquiry with Intentional STEAM Experiences
STEAM education is the catalyst for our next generation of inventors, innovators, and leaders. Children that experience rich STEAM based lessons are better problem solvers, creative collaborators, and more inclined to be thoughtful risk-takers. In this session, participants will learn ways to honor and guide the interests and natural curiosity of 3- to 5-year-olds through Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math based experiences. We will explore the world of STEAM, discuss, and plan intentional activities that are sure to have ALL your students building like engineers and creating like artists.

Essentials of Writing for Little Hands
Through this training participants will gain an advanced understanding of the writing process with children in the early childhood monolingual, bilingual and dual language classroom. We will investigate developmentally appropriate stages of motor development for young learners. Participants will discover how to encourage writing through modeled, shared, and independent experiences. Participants will explore strategies and materials that intentionally nurture, while extending writing throughout their daily routine. Participants will be asked to reflect on their current practice and collaborate with others. This session would be appropriate for intermediate to advanced participants and stakeholders that work with toddler to transitional kindergarten aged students.
